over the break

places that stay open when the calendar goes quiet.

Cameco Meewasin Skating Rink

free outdoor skating by the river beside the Delta Bessborough, a downtown rink strung with lights and warmed by a fire pit on the edge. skate rentals go by donation, so you can show up with nothing and still get out on the ice. it is open through the deep of winter, and there is something about skating with the river and the city lights around you that beats any indoor rink. lace up, do a few laps, then thaw out by the fire. one of the best winter afternoons in the city, and it costs next to nothing.

wed–sun 1–8pm · mid-dec to mid-marchdowntown

Optimist Hill

the only downhill ski and snowboard hill inside the city, tucked into Diefenbaker Park. winter brings groomed runs, a terrain park, lessons, and snow tubing for people who would rather just slide down. rentals are on site, so you can show up with nothing and still get out on the snow. the same slope runs programming in the warmer months too. a genuinely good way to spend a cold afternoon close to home.

Forestry Farm Park & Zoo

a small accredited zoo of mostly cold-climate and rescued animals, set in a leafy park on the east side. wander the loop past bison, elk, lynx, and the bird enclosures, then let the kids loose on the Superhero Trail and the playground. there are walking paths and picnic spots for the warmer months, and the park fills with holiday lights through December. one of the more underrated family afternoons in the city, and cheap for what you get.
